A "Home Made" Energy Saving Concept To Consider...
"Spend $10 today, and save hundreds of dollars over the next few years on your utility bill!".... Boy, what a line !
.... But, there really is a way to save some money on your electric bill, if you want, and it will only cost you the price of a couple of the new "compact fluorescent" light bulbs (about $5-$8 each).
Here is how it works......
First, most of us have at least one or two lights that we leave on a lot. It might be a bathroom light that is on all night, it might also be an outside porch light or a garden pole light. Our standard light bulb (called an incandescent light bulb) works by heating a up metal filament in the bulb so hot that it glows and gives off light. A 100 watt bulb will cost about $95 per year here in Cleveland, if you leave it on 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. (See Below)
A "100 watt" sized compact fluorescent bulb actually uses about 27 watts of electricity, and will therefore save you about $70 per year in electricity. But, better yet, the compact fluorescent bulbs are usually guaranteed for at least 5 years, and therefore could save you that $70 for 5 years, for a total savings of about $350 !!! Not a bad investment for less than $10!!!
Regular Light Bulb (Incandescent) Costs:
100 watts per bulb x 24 hours per day =
2.4 kilowatt hours
Local Cleveland, Ohio electric rates =
$0.11 per kilowatt hour
Daily cost for that 24 hours of light = $0.26
Annual cost for that 100 watt bulb (365 days) = $96.36
Compact Fluorescent Bulb Costs:
27 watts per bulb x 24 hours per day =
0.65 kilowatt hours
Local Cleveland, Ohio electric rates =
$0.11 per kilowatt hour
Daily cost for that 24 hours of light = $0.07
Annual cost for that 100 watt bulb (365 days) = $25.55
Savings:
$96.36 - $25.55 = $70.81 per year
5 year savings $70.81 x 5 = $354.05
